Why “Mayan Moon” Retreat?
What is the significance of the name "Mayan Moon" for the retreat?
The Mayan Moon Retreat name signifies respect for the indigenous people and communities of the land that the retreat takes place on. Akumal, MX is located near the Riviera Maya nestled in the jungle between Cancun and Tulum. This location makes for the perfect healing space because of it’s history, culture and the distinct healing modalities and wisdom of the Maya. During the Mayan Moon Retreat we incorporate traditional Mayan healing modalities, like Temazcal (or Temazacali), Sobada (medicinal massage) and more. The Maya are Native to the lands of Mexico and are split into several different tribes or sub-sects. In this particular region, the Yucateca Maya Inhabited the land known as the Yucatan Peninsula as early as 7000- 2000 BC and thrived until the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in 1527. Prior to colonial invasion the Maya built some of the most marvelous temples, pyramids, and villages in the world, including UNESCO world heritage site, Chichen Itza. Maya territory stretches from Southern US to Mexico and throughout Central and South America. The Maya are known for their advanced science, math, medicine and cosmology. The most popular is the Mayan Calendar. The Mayan Moon Retreat was created in honor, not only of the advancement and wisdom of the Maya but the powerful ancestors as well. Specifically Ix’chel the Mayan Goddess of the Womb, the Moon and Medicine. Ix’chel has a temple on the Island located at the southernmost point on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, very close to where the retreat is held, known as Isla Mujeres or Women’s Island. The ceremonies and activities of the retreat are coordinated under the full moon and under the watchful eye of the mother, Ixchel. She assists with the transformation and purification of each participant with the love and presence of a cosmic mother. Ixchel also assists us with mother wounds, womb illnesses helping to clear pain and trauma from the wounds. We value and appreciate the space so the retreat carries the name of those who provided the wisdom for this experience to take place.
